A group of doctors from St. Philomena’s Hospital with the collaboration of Hasiru Dala, an NGO
from Bengaluru, organized a medical camp and associated healthcare services such as
Physiotherapy. The target demographic of this health camp was composed of migrants, rag
pickers and the people who lived in the slum area in this location.
The camp was organized on May 3, 2024 between 10 AM and 2 PM. Since it was a slum area
the healthcare services were easily accessible by the people living in the close quarters to
where the camp was set up. There were three doctors, one from the Family Medicine
department, the second from Paediatrics and the third a Gynaecologist, all of whom attended to
the specific healthcare needs of the people who attended the camp. A nurse and a
physiotherapist were also among the personnel provided by St. Philomena’s Hospital for the
success of the camp, and to achieve the core aspect of providing clinical support to
underprivileged people.
The structure of the manner in which the camp was conducted can be divided into three parts:
Registration of the people attending the camp
Examination of the registered individuals
Distribution of medication as prescribed by the doctors
The initial assessment was done by checking vital signs, weight, SpO2 for all the age groups. It
was observed that most of the people who participated in the camp were men, women and
children.
The common diseases and conditions observed during the examination of the people at the
camp can be listed as:
Hypertension
Diabetes mellitus
Age related problems
Common cold and cough
Fever
Body pain
Anaemia
Vitamin deficiency
Malnourishment
Antenatal and Postnatal women’s care
Skin problems
Worm infestation, and other health concerns.
Another aspect that has already been mentioned is that people who were examined were daily
wage workers, rag pickers and migrants from other states who did not have access to Primary
Health Centres or they shy away from visiting dispensaries owing to cost or ease of access in
their locality. After the examination phase a few people were advised to have their blood
checked and some of them were even referred to St. Philomena’s Hospital for further
consultation and evaluation with relevant specialists.
After the camp concluded the people who attended the camp and who were examined by our
doctors and were given the necessary medicines to start their journey of healing, they were very
grateful for being a part of this health camp. The medical camp ended at 2 PM.
